During the Europe/Africa Olympic Qualifier teams Israel and Italy faced off. Heading into the bottom of the 7th, Italy’s 1B Chris Colabello had gone 2/2 with 2 RBIs and 2 doubles. Those runs had tied the game at 2 to end the 5th. In the bottom half of the 7th, with the score tied and the go-ahead run on base for Italy, Colabello stepped up to the plate to face Jonathan De Marte.
De Marte took the hill for the 1st time in the 7th and was throwing around the plate. He threw 6 pitches against the first batter he faced before Colabello stepped into the box. Colabello fouled off the initial pitch and then, this happened.
Colabello was out for the night, but not the tournament. He was back in the box the following evening, wearing a special face guard. Over the tournament he hit .421 with 4 runs off 8 hits, including 2 doubles and 2 homeruns, while batting in 8, over 19 at bats. Chris struck out twice, was walked once and, in this instance, took one to the face for a HBP.
